Sugar Sugar Everywhere...Except in This Little Town

There was a small town in America named Barley. This little town was located just off of Route 66 in Americas heartland. They were famous for there baking abilities and made the best cinnamon roles and pecan swirls in the country. After a few years of booming business and non-stop tourism they decided to buy enough sugar to last them 15 years. They never wanted to run out of sugar so that they would always be able to make their amazing desserts and delicacies. Since it was on the main road to cross the United States, all of the citizens of Barley became confident that they would never have any monetary needs as long as they lived. What they didn't expect was the construction of Interstate 40 about 20 miles south of the town. After a few months less and less tourists where coming through and so some shops began to close and move until a few of the original founders families were all that remained. For years this town continued to open up their shops with false hope that someday some body would come through and help revitalize the town. For another 10 years the town remained at a stand still. Finally the 15 year supply of sugar they bought ran out. Since it had been so long since they had to purchase any sugar not a single citizen knew or remembered how to get enough to keep the town running. Some bakers attempted to make cakes using other spices. Some used cayenne pepper, which made people have heart burn. others used garlic which made their breathe smell awful. Eventually the town had a meeting to decide whether to close down the town and hope to make money somewhere else, or to send somebody out to find a sugar supplier. They decided to send someone out to find a supplier, but nobody had left the town in nearly 20 years and return. One of the town council's sons volunteered for the job and said all he would need would be enough money to get the sugar and a truck to bring back what he could. The desperate citizens gave the kid all of the money they could scrounge and the local hardware store gave him a truck to haul the sugar with. The kid left around noon on a Wednesday and everyone cheered him on his way out. After about a week without any word or sight of him the town grew anxious. They all wondered what was taking so long, and why they hadn't gotten at least a phone call. After another week they assumed the boy had swindled them for everything they had in hopes that he would save their town. They decided after the third week of his absence that he was never returning and they all packed up and left the the town to settle elsewhere. Two weeks after they left the boy returned with a fleet of sugar trucks only to discover that the entire town had left.
