Poem Reflection

This Is Just To Say

This is more of an apology note than a poem to me. It is so simple that to call it a poem almost makes no sense. Being 12 short lines about plums I wanted to see deeper meaning to it but there is nothing to figure out unless your plums are missing out of your freezer.

Grass

This is another simple poem except this one has a deeper meaning. It is speaking of grass. Through all of the death and destruction that the wars have caused throughout history there is one thing that they have in common. Grass will cover the graves of the deceased in less time than people will be able to forget about them. This poem makes me feel like the writer is telling a person that regardless of what happens, life can continue. If a death or a loss has you down you can go on with your life beasue something will come and replace your loss.

Carnation Milk

This is by far my favorite poem. It is the shortest of the three poems I chose to write about but that is not why I chose it. It has a simple meaning and is almost a commercial for the product that the poem is named after. It is short sweet and to the point and uses a sarcastic overtone to let you know that Carnation milk is easy to handle and what really made me like it so much is the ending about just having to punch a hole in the son of a bitch.

The Falling Flower

I love Haikus. Haikus are simple sweet and don't need a point or meaning. Some do have meaning like The Falling Flower. It speaks about how a falling flower really is a butterfly. The meaning here is that everything is not what it seems and you should take a second look.

Making jazz swing in

Again I chose a Haiku but this one is different. Most Haikus are traditionally Japanese and speak of nature but this one is a more modern version of an ancient poem and speaks about one of my favorite music genres. It also says that making a poem using only 17 syllables isn't just for anyone.

Learning To Shave

This Haiku is a good one. This is about shaving for the first time which is like a rite of passage for boys becoming men. The first time a boy shaves he is likely to nick himself somewhere and once that is done you will understand how to shave better fromthat point on and that makes me see the manhood that is achieved at that point.

I did the same thing with Cigarette girl

In Cigarette Girl, Mike McCarthy uses black and white picture scheme and a lack of certain details to make each viewer draw their own conclusions. This is like reading a book but instead of using descriptive words you get to see the picture and draw from that. The plot is surprisingly deep and just when you think you know what will happen next a twist comes along to keep you on the edge of your seat. In class we talked about the difference in Reality vs. Fantasy and this movie really brings all of that out. This is definitely a movie where each individual has to draw his own conclusions. The story leaves a lot of question marks when it comes to the characters like why are all the characters nameless basically. If I can make it to the event with Mike McCarthy I will enjoy asking him about the characters names. The story also seems to be like a propaganda film for the anti-smoking movement and seems to compare them to drugs, but set in the year 2035 after cigarette prices skyrocket.

So I didnt realize I wrote this and never used it as a blog.

I have never been to a poetry reading before and didn’t really know what to expect. Poetry isn’t really something I am interested in, my English teacher my senior year made us write a poem about something we had lost (I posted it as a blog several weeks ago if you would like to read it) and I enjoyed that but other peoples poetry never really set with me. As I was listening to the first poet read his work I began to think about why I was there only to remember it was required for class and tried to pay more attention but his words were so intense and deep I could stay focused and understand him. The next poet was the first to come up with anything halfway decent. His poems were funny and his story stuck with me but he was a little messed up. The first reading was about an avocado colered toilet. The poem about putting an avocado colored toilet in the back of a truck. Im not sure what the real point of this story was but the concept was definetley hilarious and the way he read his poems in such an animated way almost like he was acting them out. The difference in the way the poems were read made me realize that poetry is all about how somebody feels about what they are reading or writing. I don’t think the event was enough to make me want to go to another reading. This all goes back to the class where we read the poems where I read one and one of the female students read the poem aloud and showed us that the reader affects the meaning in a poem.

GEAUX TIGERS GO

Larry Porter was named as the new head football coach at Memphis. Porter is a Memphis alumnus and former football player. He is top 10 in rushing yards in Memphis history and before sunday had served under Les Miles at LSU as the running backs coach and as assistant head coach and chief recruiter. While at LSU he was named national recruiter of the year twice. While coaching for Les Miles he has coached in the BCS national championship game and 4 other bowl games all of which LSU won. Being part of the coaching staff of an elite SEC school and being from the city of Memphis I think Porter will be able to bring Memphis back to bowl contention and maybe bring them to a new level of play like our schools basketball program. I want everyone to give him the same chance that Tommy West was given and let him make the necessary changes to the program and hopefully he will produce. Another thing I don't want to see is the boosters, namely Fred Smith, trying to force Porter to play certain players, namely Cannon Smith, just because they want them to start. With the support I know Memphis fans are capable of and the skill in recruiting and coaching that Porter brings to Memphis there is no doubt in my mind that we can become a better program. My only issue here is that Im also an LSU fan and dont want to see our best recruiter leave.

Chevy 3/28/09-11/28/09

In March of 2009 my sister adopted a chocolate lab puppy who was only 3 weeks old. She named him Chevy and gave him to her boyfriend as a birthday present. The dog spent most of his time at my house playing with my puppy fender. On Thursday they brought Chevy over for thanksgiving to play with the other dogs while we ate dinner. The whole night he laid at my feet and played with me without a care in the world. two days later he turned 8 months old and played like the puppy he was loving my everyone unconditionally. Wade, my sisters boyfriend, left his 16 year old brother at home with Chevy for only 30 minutes when he received a phone call from his little brother saying someone tried to brake in. After rushing back home Wade walked into the bedroom to find Chevy dead on the floor with a shotgun wound to the head. The police arrived not long after only to discover that the little brother lied about the burglary attempt. There were no signs of forced entry and the story Wades brother told didn't add up. He claimed he dropped the gun and it went off killing Chevy, but the gunshot wound was to the top of the head and if someone had tried to break in he would have done his job and been at the door barking. Eventually he confessed that he broke into the gun cabinet to play with the shot gun and accidentally pulled the trigger while playing with the dog. Chevy was one of the best dogs I have ever known and everyone that met him fell in love immediately. It still seems unreal to think that I will never see him run through the house chasing my dog or laying in the backyard chewing on a bone and I just dont know what to do.

Ticketmaster Sucks

So my girlfriend really wanted to go see the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular. I went to ticketmaster.com to buy the tickets intending to spend around $150 after all of the online fees and things. I get to looking for tickets and find 2 for $54 after all the fees. I checked the date and put my card information. The site then decided to make me certify my Visa card whatever that means and it took more than 10 minutes to process and eventually timed out my order.I went through the same process a second time and that time it correctly processed my order. The next day, the day I ordered the tickets for, I read my email and I had one from ticket master telling me to review my show. I read more into it and somehow their website let me buy tickets to a show that was already over by the time I finished placing my order. I called Ticketmaster to see if they could help me. The first lady I talked to was very pleasant and tried to help me but her boss said there was nothing they could do. I asked to talk to her boss and after 10 minutes on hold a rude "what do you want" was the greeting I received. I explained that the website let me purchase tickets for a show that was already over and that I wanted tickets to another show and she said "well you read the confirmation page wrong so its your fault that you ordered the wrong tickets" and proceeded to hang up on me. I called back and asked for the supervisor again and the same woman answered. After nearly 5 minutes of arguing with her I asked for her boss. She told me that she did not have a boss and that she was in charge. My response to that statement was to ask her if she was the owner of ticketmaster and her response to that was to hung up again. I sent an email to ticketmaster customer service and sales department and 3 days later I still have not gotten a response I guess my next step is to call the Better Business Bureau and hope they can help me work this out.

Universal Health Care

One of my favorite topics that really seems to get everyone talking is universal health care. The House of Representatives recently passed a bill onto the Senate that would essentially create universal health care. I take issue with this for many reasons. The United States has always been a symbol of freedom, but this new bill would make it a criminal offense for somebody not to have health insurance. This bill would also require business owners with more than 25 employees to provide health insurance or risk them being charged heavy fines. Most people would argue that this is acceptable because not everyone can afford to pay for health insurance and the poor should get free health care. Well first of all there are free clinics for people to go to and the emergency rooms are required to provide care to patience if it is funded with tax payer dollars. Second of all this "free health care" would not be free. Income taxes would be increased to pay the bills incurred would cost the taxpayers even more money and the richest Americans would be forced to pay for people who don't have a job and those too lazy to get one. It has been pointed out that Americans go to Canada to get prescription drugs because their universal health care has lowered the price of them. Many people do not know that the Canadians come to America when they have to go to a doctor for a serious reason because America has the best doctors and technology available for diagnostics and treatment. This is makes it obvious to me that although some countries have a better healthcare system it doesn't mean that they have better health care services. The American system allows for more qualified people to become doctors because they can set their own prices rather then a government trained employee who would make a lot less and that would allow for more less qualified citizens to become doctors and personally I prefer a more qualified doctor regardless of price. I could keep going and I probably will for next weeks blogs but it is almost midnight so I am going to bed.
